Sometimes during work, we come across records related to the lives of famous figures or people of aristocratic origin.

While reviewing the pages of the church register from the village of Andriyashivka, among numerous records of children born to Cossacks and peasants, I came across a record of the birth of Olga Petrovna Kochubey, a hereditary noblewoman, on June 4, 1910.

What stands out is the detailed description of her father's titles — a hereditary nobleman, a chamberlain in the court of His Imperial Majesty.

The priest also made sure to mention the maiden name of her mother, emphasizing her noble, aristocratic descent. Typically, in the Orthodox church registers of the Russian Empire, the maiden name only appears during the marriage, and its search can be a real challenge, especially if the bride is from a different locality.

Often during genealogical research, we come across so-called "wanderers" — people who traveled hundreds of kilometers away from their registered place of residence in search of a bride or for other personal reasons. Some of them later returned to their homeland, and now their descendants are unable to trace the origin of their mothers or grandmothers.

A peasant from the Minsk province, for unknown reasons, decided to marry in the Zhytomyr region, and this was at a time when traveling took several days. Perhaps your ancestry also includes such "wanderers," and your ancestors come from lands where you would never have thought to search for your forebears.

Indeed, Malka Betman or her father probably never imagined that their surname would one day sound similar to the name of a famous movie and comic book hero.

There is a common belief that all bearers of surnames ending in "man" are descendants of people of Jewish or German origin. However, this is not true

For example, the Orthodox Batsman family from the town of Polonne in the Volyn province proves that not all "mans" are Jews or Germans. A surname alone does not always allow one to accurately determine the ethnic origin of a family.

It would seem, where to look for a record of the birth of an ancestor whose parents, by all indications, were German Lutherans?

It would seem, where to look for a record of the birth of an ancestor whose parents, by all indications, are Germans - Lutherans? The father is August Gottschalt. The mother is Maria, daughter of Adolf. At first glance, everything seems more or less obvious — a Lutheran church or a Catholic church!

In reality, the record was made in the Orthodox church of the village of Shyrivtsi, because the mother, despite her probable German origin, is Orthodox. And the reason for this is the legislation of the Russian Empire, according to which children from mixed marriages had to be baptized in the Orthodox church.

Could you imagine that your ancestors were nobility?

Many people never even think about it, and it’s no surprise, as wars, revolutions, and social upheavals have radically transformed the social landscape in the territories of the former Russian Empire.

If your surname ends with "sky," for example, "Podgorsky," there is a high probability that your ancestors were nobles or odnodvortsy—a class of impoverished gentry.
